His first library book of stories was published in 1974, at that time he was studying philosophy at the renowned Maxim Gorky literature institute in Moscow; after that he worked as a journalist at the Libyan cultural institute there, and in Warsaw he worked for the cultural magazine as a journalist and editor. He moved to Switzerland in 1993 where he is living now.
Alkoni won many prizes in different countries and by 2007 he has published 80 books which have been translated into 35 languages, and now he is one of the most prolific Arabic novelist in this country.
